In present context, mathematics is used throughout the world in many fields. Mathematics is all around us. It is present in different forms. The concept of mathematics is very useful in our daily lives. Things are measured or accurate due to mathematics. Every person knowingly or unknowingly is using the concept of mathematics. Such as, if a person goes t o buy vegetables, e uses unitary method to find the unit price. A guardian calculates the percentage of marks obtained by his child to compare the progress in the study. A shopkeeper thinks of cost price of selling price to obtain maximum profit. A customer calculates the discount amount according to the given discount percentage. So, the use of mathematical concepts is very useful in our daily life.
Some of the mathematical concepts and their uses in daily life are presented below;
Counting systems and number system:
The most common use of mathematics is the counting of numbers. The origins of mathematical thought lie in the concepts of number, magnitude, and from. It has been used from generation to generation in almost all cultures and civilizations. In ancient time, various counting systems and different number systems were used for counting discrete objects such as animals, tools, and containers, counting cheese and grain products, to count volumes of grain, weights, and areas of land, time units and calendar units etc. and these systems changes over the years.
The prehistoric people has used general realizations to count the physical objects surrounding them such as sheep, cattle, fruits etc. the basic principles of arithmetic(addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) had also naturally followed. The first method of counting was counting on fingers, which has been widely used over the period up to now. By placing the thumb on various finger joints a person can count up to 90,000.
With the progression in different civilizations, different number systems were developed. Sumerian, Babylonians, Greeks, Romans, Mayans, Egyptians, Asians and Arabians have used various numbers and number system. Amount them the base 10 number system (Decimal number) is widely used up to now. The counting and number systems are required in everyday life, either to count thousand of Rupees or to count RBC, WBC and Platelets in the blood or to count the number of planet, stars in the universe
General Arithmetic:
Arithmetic is the use of various numbers in counting and calculations. The basic four operations of arithmetic i.e. add, subtract, multiply and divide are required to carry out everyday calculations. Counting change, budgeting, managing time, calculating tips and tax, memorizing phone numbers and locker combinations and estimating time and distance are all situations where basic numeracy and math skills are needed. Besides these basic mathematical concepts, there are other mathematical tools and methods in arithmetic which help our daily lifestyles.
Ratio and proportion is used in cooking recipes, clinical preparations. In banking several types of ratios are used to show the relations between various factors of operations. Such as cash and credit ratio, assets and liabilities ratio, earning ratio etc.
Logical Reasoning:
Mathematics includes logic. The theories of reasoning are used by ancient philosophers like Euclid, Plato, Aristotle and others. Regardless of what spoken language we use, all people can use their logic. Logical reasoning used every moment of the living beings.
Algebra:
Algebra is similar as the general arithmetic, with letters standing for numbers. Every general operation rules of arithmetic and algebra are similar. Algebra gives methods for solving equations and expressing formulas that are much easier than the older method of writing everything out in words. Algebra is essential for any study of mathematics, science, or engineering. It is commonly used in medicine and economics as well. For every calculation regarding hypotheses, mathematical verifications, scientific experiments algebraic assumptions are used.
